Project: Ghibli Film Mural
For this project, I challenged myself to design and paint a large-scale mural composed of scenes and characters from various Studio Ghibli films, focusing on capturing the emotional essence that defines their storytelling. Rather than simply recreating iconic moments, I carefully selected imagery that represented recurring themes across the studio’s works — wonder, environmentalism, childhood innocence, grief, and quiet resilience.
The StoryEach section of the mural was thoughtfully arranged to flow into the next, blending different worlds into one cohesive landscape. Characters were positioned in ways that suggested subtle interaction across films, creating a shared universe built on mood and atmosphere rather than strict narrative continuity. I paid particular attention to colour transitions, using soft gradients and natural palettes to echo the hand-painted warmth that makes Ghibli’s animation feel alive.
Beyond technical execution, this mural became an exploration of nostalgia and collective memory. Studio Ghibli’s films often serve as emotional landmarks in people’s lives, and my goal was to create a piece that felt familiar yet newly unified — something that invites viewers to pause, recognize fragments of stories they love, and experience them together in one expansive visual conversation.
Ultimately, the mural is both a tribute and a reinterpretation: honouring the artistry of Ghibli while transforming individual cinematic moments into a single, immersive environment that reflects the timeless magic and humanity at the heart of their films.
